Trend Watch: The Bridgerton Effect

[ad_1]

The Netflix series Bridgerton has inspired a trend known as “regencycore” — the tendency to decorate homes in the style of the early 1800s-era England.

Welcome to Trend Watch, a Home Accents Today feature that stays ahead of the curve by alerting you to shifts in consumer attitudes and behavior that we think could potentially impact home furnishings down the road. We cull news and information from the world outside home furnishings — from fashion to architecture to food —and ask experts to predict what this potentially means for our own industry.

Trend Watch: “Bridgerton Effect”

The Trend: The Netflix series “Bridgerton” is back for its second season and according to Uswitch, a U.K.-based price comparison website, it is one of the most influential TV shows on home furnishings design, with 1,900 annual searches for Bridgerton-inspired interiors over the last year. Google searches for “regencycore” — the tendency to decorate homes in the style of the early 1800s-era England — increased by 354% from the day before Bridgerton aired to the day after it aired in March. The popular show also inspired the latest installment of Bloomingdale’s pop-up Carousel shop in its Manhattan flagship.

The Expert: Patti Carpenter, design, color and trend consultant and principal and creative director of Continuum Home, Inc. and Carpenter & Company.

The Expert’s view: “We are definitely seeing the influence of Bridgerton on tabletop. Bloomingdales is offering a beautiful Sheila Bridges collection with Harlem toile in it that offers a mix of Black folks doing what they do but in a Bridgerton time frame. I see a lot of influence from the show in color, form and patterning for both tabletop and perhaps for home accent furniture such as side and coffee tables. We also may see more ornate framing on imagery for photos and paintings.

“I believe as Gen Z starts to look backwards, Bridgerton might become part of an overarching nostalgia trend. Nostalgia is coming back as part of the subset of the Grand Millennial trend which shows an appreciation of the past, classic style and tradition with a twist. Another trend inspired by Bridgerton is the increased focus on having and serving tea with beautiful teapots as well as more ornate end tables.”
