SURREY, BRITISH COLUMBIA – Mercana Furniture and Décor has acquired a new 124,676 square-foot distribution center in Newport News, Va. which will serve the company’s East Coast and central U.S. customers.

“Located near all major port terminals and railroads, Newport News is extremely favorable for inbound and outbound shipping,” said Michael Saby, Mercana chief operations officer. “This investment will improve the agility of our supply chain and allow us to get products to our customers quicker than ever before. We expect to cut lead times from 7-10 business days to just 2-3 business days.”

Saby said the new facility is a game changer for the company’s U.S. customers since they will also be able to centralize all returns to this facility and potentially offer a white glove service.

Formerly occupied by Canon Global, the center will house thousands of items across its full lineup of art, furniture, lighting and accessories.

The company worked closely with the Virginia Economic Development Partnership and the Newport News Industrial Development Authority to ensure its part in the city’s initiative to attract new business investment into the region.

“With close to 300 parking spaces available, this facility provides massive opportunity to expand in the future,” added Saby. “We plan to employ at least 26 roles within our first year of operation and hope that more efficiency will bring more roles as we grow into the space.”

Mercana President Devon Smith said his company is driven by a sense of community and purpose.

“We never want to lose sight of these values and are excited to be playing a part in cultivating sustainable business in the area,” Smith said. “As for our customers, we’re excited to be able to meet their needs more efficiently as consumer demand continues to grow in 2022.”

Mercana designs and produces more than 15,000 items across 35 categories in styles from rustic to modern.
