How to Turn Your Bedroom Into a Warm & Cozy Boho Retreat

Modern bohemian style is all about tapping into that easy-breezy West Coast attitude for a space that reduces the buzz of everyday life to a whisper. It’s no wonder it’s become a go-to look for bedrooms, the first place we retreat to when we need a little R&R.

Lis Engelhart, Good Housekeeping’s visual styling director, is a huge fan. “I love how boho style evokes a destination like a beach getaway or boutique hotel, and that’s just the sort of dreamy and relaxed vibe that you want in your bedroom,” she says.

Luckily, you can tap into the tranquility of modern boho style at The Home Depot. They have an entire collection of products that, when combined, can turn your bedroom into a free-spirited oasis, from pillows to rugs and more.*

Read on to learn how you can create your own inviting escape at home in just four steps.

Choose a calming color scheme

Serenity now! Paint your walls in warmer white hues to stay relaxed.

Break out the paintbrush, because the dreamiest of boho bedrooms are grounded by blissful white walls. But does the shade matter? Oh, yeah. Cooler tones can make your room feel clinical and stark, so Engelhart suggests reaching for warmer hues that will be more relaxing to the eye, like Behr Swiss Coffee. She adds, “Make sure to test samples on all four walls to see how the light affects the shade throughout the day.”

From there, tap into the serenity of nature by rounding out your color palette with earthy shades, like terracotta, camel, sage, and mustard. And if your space is on the smaller side, turn down the saturation of this supporting cast for added buoyancy.

Use texture to pile on the personality

Infuse your soothing hideaway with character and depth through a patchwork of textural details. Toss mismatched pillows with playful tassels onto your bed and chairs; double down on fuzzy linens; ground the space with a woven rug (or layer two on top of one another for some added flair). Without these touches, your restful retreat could fall flat—literally.

Oh, let’s not forget about the anchor of your room: the ever-important bed frame. Go for a wood option that proudly wears its grain, or dip into one of Engelhart’s favorite trends: rattan.

Caned and rattan furniture complements both traditional and contemporary spaces.

“Caned and rattan furniture has an airy lightness to it and resembles outdoor furniture, which helps bring that vacation vibe into an indoor space,” she says. “These textural materials also complement both traditional and contemporary spaces, so they’ll never go out of style.” Complete the look by parking a rustic sisal bench at its foot so you can slide into your slippers with ease.

Make sure everything has a place

If there’s a place for your glasses, you won’t forget where they are.

Corral your clutter in handwoven baskets, a staple of any boho look. According to Ehgelhart, thoughtful placement can also help optimize your routine. “A small basket on your nightstand can house night creams, an eye mask, and your latest library book,” the styling director says.

Bonus: Since baskets don’t have lids, nothing is totally out of sight and out of mind, meaning you’ll never miss an opportunity to put your essentials to work. “If you can see it, you’ll use it,” Engelhart adds.

Give it a final flourish

Make the bedroom your own personal boho paradise.

David Tsay

Boho style calls for blurring the lines between the indoors and out. Luckily, all it takes are a few lush, air-purifying houseplants like philodendron, snake plants, or lavender. No green thumb? No worries. Simply mix faux and fresh greenery together to create a mini jungle that’s a bit easier to care for.

First, “plant” your faux blooms in real pots or baskets. Then add decorative moss, bend the stems to face the sun, and place a watering can nearby to complete the illusion. You could even snap up some dried pampas grass or palm fronds. Once everything is in place, take a deep breath, grab a good book, and settle into your own personal paradise.
