LOS ANGELES — Bobby Berk, Queer Eye star and interior designer, was revealed to be behind the Caterpillar costume during the semifinals of The Masked Singer, a singing game show on Fox network.
On season six episode 10, preforming as the Caterpillar, Berk sang “Friends in Low Places” by Garth Brooks. His songs in previous episodes included “If I Were a Boy” by Beyoncé and “It’s Gonna Be Me” by Nsync.
The judges Robin Thicke, Nicole Scherzinger, Jenny McCarthy and Ken Jeong had been unable to guess that Berk was the masked singer. Some of the guesses were Tyler Hubbard from Florida Georgia Line, actor Owen Wilson, actor Dan Levy, actor Jake Gyllenhaal and AJ McLean from the Backstreet Boys.
“I am totally fine being compared with a boyband because obviously I’m not a professional singer,” said Berk. “Before going on this show, I really assumed that all this stuff was pre-recorded because I’m, like, there’s no way people are really singing in those costumes. But no, this is actually not the case. I really did have to sing inside of that costume.”
The Caterpillar was the heaviest costume in the show’s history. “Have you ever been buried alive? I have not until this costume, but I feel like that’s what it would feel like,” he said. “It was the most adorable costume almost ever … despite not being able to move, and it was really hot.”
Although Berk will not be in the game show’s finals, he can be seen hosting the holiday season of the Netflix glass-blowing competition “Blown Away: Christmas”, which debuted Friday, Nov. 19.
